Day 13 - Free day in Orkney and GOLF!

Katelynd and I had some free time this morning and decided to explore the Earl and Bishop’s Palaces in Kirkwall. We had a great time spending time exploring the various rooms in both of the ruined palaces. They were fairly similar to most of the other castle ruins that we have seen on the trip so far. However, the views of the island and the water from the top of the towers were amazing. The views of St. Magnus cathedral were spectacular as well. All of the history and beauty of this place is making me more and more attached!
Danny, Dr. Cartrite, and I decided to experience the local golf club this afternoon – The Orkney Golf Club. It was a great time! The wind was definitely something that I wasn’t used to playing in, but after I got used to it, I played much better. The golf course was much different than anything I have played in the States, especially when it came to the maintenance of the course. The grass is longer, even on the greens and especially in the rough! Nonetheless, it was exciting to say that we golfed in Scotland, the home of golf!
The rest of the day I spent relaxing and enjoying my dinner of authentic fish and chips. It was delicious! I’m sure that I will find myself missing such a meal when I get home!

Tomorrow: Lunch with MSP Liam McArthur and the Orkney Museum!
