Today we rode the train into Aberdeen to visit the University of Aberdeen. While we were there, we got a tour of the campus. The university is over 500 years old and so beautiful! All of the buildings have a unique character and the cobble stone roads are my favorite! They have pubs on campus where everyone hangs out and they even have a Subway (mmmmmm!). We met up with some Alma students that were studying abroad there. John (I think that's what his name was :]) told us that it was a cool experience and it was definitely something we should look into. He's spent most of his free time travelling rather inexpensively (5 to 10 pounds for airline tickets) to other European countries and cities.
The school is amazing - it reminds me of a larger Alma College, but with older buildings. However, the schools work differently over here - I'm sure that would be the hardest thing to get used to. I'm considering it for one of my study abroad options in the coming future.
After our tour, we had lunch at a cafe courtesy of the university. Later, I decided to help Sam out by going over to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum to fill out some surveys on my museum experience. I learned an incredible amount about the shipping and oil industry within Aberdeen and the rest of Scotland. The part about the oil didn't surprise me much, since Aberdeen has been taken over by the oil industry as well as the northern part of Scotland. It was different than I thought it would be - thanks in part to a scavenger hunt that I helped Emma with. We definitely learned a lot there!
We had a group dinner in Aberdeen at Revolutions - and it was the most at home I have felt since travelling to Scotland! It had a very American feel to it (thanks in part to the rap and hip hop music as well as the pepperoni and pineapple pizza). They even had Long Island Ice Teas that they claimed were "tall, dark, and handsome... just like Barack!" It's so strange how much everyone is infatuated with our president here. There is more support for Obama here than there is in the United States. I think it's great!
We traveled back to Stonehaven, and after sitting on the beach for a while, I have decided to turn in early. I have been so exhausted!
Tomorrow: Inverness!
